Why you need it

How it works

The gear splines to the mainshaft and meshes with the counter gear. The synchronizer cone matches speed; then the sleeve locks onto dog teeth to carry torque. Correct tooth profile reduces whine, and accurate runout keeps the shift smooth.

Expect 2-3 grind, pop-out under load, harsh vibration only in 3rd, metallic whine, metal flakes in oil, and heat. Continued driving can chip teeth, ruin the synchro hub, and overload bearings, leading to costly failure.

Tech tips ️

Always inspect synchro ring and hub, replace snap rings, set endplay, pre-lube with GL-4 oil, and torque to spec. After install, change oil and road-test for noise only in 3rd.
