Timing Chain Front Cover Assembly
This engine front cover seals the timing drive on Subaru’s boxer platform, keeping oil in and dirt out. It supports the chain guides and tensioner, routes lubrication, and locks chain alignment so valve timing stays precise. A healthy cover protects power, fuel economy, and long engine life ⚙️.
Why you need it
The cover maintains oil pressure around the timing set, holds crank and cam seals, and provides a rigid base for accessories. It prevents leaks that can lower oil level, cause mess on belts, and attract grit that wears sprockets and guides.
How it works
Made from precision-cast aluminum, the housing encloses the chain, with passages feeding oil to the tensioner and guides. A formed gasket/RTV bead seals the perimeter to the block. Integrated seats for the crankshaft and cam seals keep lubrication in while shafts spin at high speed .
What happens if it’s damaged
Expect oil leaks, burnt-oil smell, and rattling at start-up. Low oil can starve the tensioner, letting the chain slap, drift timing, and trigger a check-engine light. In severe cases, a jumped chain risks valve-to-piston contact. Leaked oil may also foul the serpentine belt ️.
Tech tips
Replace seals and gasket, clean mating surfaces, apply the correct RTV pattern, and torque in sequence. Let sealant cure, then verify oil level and timing cover weep points.
