Oxygen Sensor Assembly (Upstream/Exhaust) ⚙️

This exhaust oxygen sensor is a key feedback device for modern Hyundai/Kia engines. It is needed to measure the oxygen level in the exhaust stream so the ECU can correct the air‑fuel mixture in real time. That keeps fuel economy strong, emissions low, and throttle response smooth.

How it works

The sensor tip sits in the hot exhaust flow and generates a signal based on remaining oxygen after combustion. A built‑in heater warms it quickly, so the system reaches “closed loop” faster after cold start. The ECU then adjusts injector pulse and, on some models, helps protect the catalytic converter from overheating or raw fuel.

If it fails

A weak or dead sensor can cause a check engine light, rich/lean running, rough idle, higher fuel use, hesitation, and failed emissions tests. Long-term driving with incorrect readings may damage the catalytic converter and foul spark plugs.
