Crankshaft Thrust Washer Kit for Toyota Engines

Why this part is needed

The crankshaft wants to move forward and backward under clutch, converter, and belt loads. These thrust washers control that end float, keeping the crank centered in the block. They protect main bearings, timing gear, and oil pump drive, and keep gearboxes shifting smoothly. Replacing worn pieces restores correct axial clearance and prevents costly bottom-end damage.

How it works

Two half-moon shells fit around a main bearing saddle (commonly the center main). Their hardened, grooved faces ride the crank’s thrust surface on a thin oil film. The selected thickness sets precise axial play, typically a few hundredths of a millimeter, so parts stay aligned and friction stays low.

What happens if it fails ⚠️

Excess end play leads to clutch drag or stall when pressing the pedal, harsh shifts, knocking at idle, scraping on start/stop, fluctuating crank sensor signals, and falling oil pressure. Left alone, it can wipe main bearings, score the crank flange, move the crank into the block, or crack the thrust faceβ€”turning a simple service into a full rebuild.

Tech tips

  • Measure end float with a dial gauge; choose grade to spec.
  • Install with oil grooves toward the crank; lubricate well.
  • Torque caps, then recheck clearance hot and cold.
